FORGET THOSE BORING LECTURES, HERE ARE EIGHT ALTERNATIVES

FORGET THOSE BORING LECTURES, HERE ARE EIGHT ALTERNATIVES

We’ve all been there, three weeks in the semester and the thought of having to go and sit in a lecture where you know you’re going to be on Facebook the whole time anyway, makes you want to cry.

Well, it’s time to say enough is enough and start using that hour in a way that’s more productive for you.

What could be more productive than catching up on your Facebook feed you ask?

Well, check out some of these activities that can all be done in an hour and that will leave you feeling more satisfied.

  • Sleep

  • This is number one on my list for a reason. Not only is sleep literally the best thing to on this planet (it’s free, it’s good for you and you don’t spend any money while you’re doing it) but it’s also so incredibly important for us uni students. According to NHS, each person roughly needs eight hours of quality sleep to function properly.

If we don’t get this on a regular basis, not only will Snow White’s dwarf, grumpy, make an appearance, but it can start to take a toll on our health as well. The last thing you need when you’ve got a load of assignments is to be sleep deprived. So do yourself a favour and take a page out of your grandparent’s book and treat yourself to a good ol’ fashioned afternoon nap.

  • Catch up on work

  • Skipping lectures to catch up on work you’re already behind? Yeah sounds about right. Why not eliminate some stress (and maybe some guilt for skipping the lecture) and get stuck into work you may have fallen behind on.

  • Update your resume, LinkedIn and Twitter profiles

  • These three things (beside yourself of course) are your biggest weapons when applying for jobs, networking or applying for internships. No employer is going to hire someone whose resume hasn’t been updated since they were 16 and whose LinkedIn Profile is blank. By taking the time to update these things, not only will you be prepared for future opportunities but opportunities you might not be looking for may come to you.

  • Plan out your week

  • Sitting down and actually planning out your week will not only eliminate unnecessary stress, but it will also help you to evaluate where you should be focusing your time and energy. This can be done with a simple timetable like structure or it can be more in-depth, just depends on what you find easier to stick to each week.

  • Start an assignment

  • Why not get a step ahead and do something you’ll thank yourself for later by starting an assignment. Whether that just means planning it out or starting research, anything you do now to get you started will help you in the long run.

  • Catch up with someone you’ve accidentally neglected

  • Whether that be your mum, sister, a friend, or even your dog, university often throws all our schedules into a frenzy and, before we know it, two weeks goes by without quality contact between loved ones. So why not de-stress for an hour and treat yourself and your friend to a yummy lunch or a movie. Not only will your guilt be wiped but chances are the person you caught up with was in much need of a relaxing hour too!

  • Respond to your emails

  • If you’re anything like me, you often forget to reply to emails and messages. It’s not like I do it on purpose, it’s just so easy to get distracted by things outside of my phone and laptop. So what better way to spend your hour then by sitting down and focusing solely on replying to your mail? Not only will you feel super organised when you’re finished, but the people on the other end can stop worrying if you’re still alive.

  • Definitely an hour well spent if you ask me…

In the end, no matter which activity you decide to ditch your lectures for, the most important thing to remember in all of this is that I no responsibility for leading you astray!
